Learning

& Mental Health
Assessments

COVID-19 has created many challenges since the middle of March. Perhaps one of the most significant challenges for both parents and students was continuing school online for the final four months of the academic year.

With uncertainty about the format for the upcoming school year (i.e., learning in the classroom, online learning, or a combination of both), it has never been more important to identify any potential challenges with learning.

With the emotional impact of COVID-19, it's crucial to identify mental health issues and how these challenges may be negatively impacting learning.

A Learning Assessment Can Help To:

  • Identify areas of strength and areas of need
  • Diagnose specific learning disabilities
  • Identify academic achievement levels in core areas, including mathematics, word reading, reading comprehension, spelling, written expression, etc.
  • Provide recommendations for use in the development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Provide recommendations for assistive technology (i.e., use of a laptop) to facilitate learning when appropriate

A Mental Health Assessment Can Help To:

  • Identify specific mental health difficulties and/or behavioural issues
  • Provide diagnosis to guide treatment
  • Determine appropriate recommendations (e.g., psychotherapy/counselling, medication consultation, resources, etc.)
  • Provide school-based recommendations, when appropriate, to assist the school support team in meeting the child’s needs

Funding for Assessments:

There are two primary funding sources for assessments. One potential option is to access coverage through workplace benefits. A second option is to obtain funding through Jordan's Principle. In memory of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba, Jordan’s Principle ensures that all Indigenous children and adolescents in Canada can access the products, services and supports they need.

If you are interested in pursuing funding through Jordan’s Principle, the first step is to contact (855)572-4453.
