Understanding A Child Who Identifies As LGBTQ And How To Provide Support
In Canada, individuals ages 15 and older who identify as LGBTQ are 3 times more likely to struggle with mental health issues when compared to non-LGTBQ individuals.
That’s highly significant.
And what’s really important to establish is that identifying as LGBTQ is not a mental disorder.
However, they do experience notably more mental health issues.
LGBTQ individuals face higher depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and phobic disorders, suicidality, self-harm and substance use disorder rates.
They are also two times more likely to struggle with PTSD when compared with the general population.
So, it’s important for parents to know how to identify the early signs of these issues, while also learning how to help reduce feelings of alienation/isolation, increase feelings of acceptance and pursue access to helpful services for their child.
Further, it’s not uncommon for parents to struggle with learning something about their child that they hadn’t expected.
For some, this can lead to notable feelings of grief and loss related to an altered future with their child.
